For me the benefits of practising as a Barrister include:
- having control over my fee structure for private paying clients (I reduced my hourly rate when I started up on my own account)
- working with clients to avoid surprises with accounts and in setting fees - looking hard at what the work is worth rather than strictly adhering to a billable hours philosophy
- being able to provide a more personal client focus without the restrictions of a corporate structure
- helping other lawyers by providing a set of skills and services for their clients that they do not themselves provide, without the risk of their clients being lured away by a competitor
- being able to get out and meet clients
- working with clients to structure and implement plans that advance their interests
